Can cabbage juice treat acid reflux?

I have been battling acid reflux for more than a year now. And in those months, I have been put through different tests including an endoscopy after which results showed that my stomach was inflamed and the doctor made me to understand that the ibuprofen that I had taken soon after a major surgery to treat the pain I was experiencing was to blame for my condition. I was given proton inhibitors over time and while I had temporary relief, the acid reflux just won’t go away.

Acid reflux also know as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when acid back flows from the stomach into the esophagus. In my experience, I had very bad heartburn that felt as though my chest was inflamed and I would feel the pain from my chest to the back of my ribs. It was such an excruciating pain. Sometimes I was nauseous as well. It was quite discomforting because I was also bloated. Other symptoms of GERD that I experienced included dry throat, sore throat and sometimes dry cough caused by the dryness in my throat. My doctor had placed me on medication and would warn that staying away from triggers was better than depending on medication as the drugs also had adverse effects on the body. I noticed that my knees started to weaken as I took the drugs and sometimes, I would hear popping sounds in my knees so I had to start consuming foods rich in calcium and taking calcium supplements as well.

Acid reflux (GERD) triggers are many and I soon realized that they vary from person to person. I learnt from reading articles on Healthline.com that I was to avoid high fat foods, tomatoes and citrus fruits, chocolate, garlic, onion, spicy foods and mint. And I did sincerely try to avoid these foods but I struggled a lot to find a balance when it came to dieting even though I was very cautious. So I could go for weeks without acid reflux and then fall back to it again.

So I started a cautious effort to eat right and to try the famous cabbage juice that everyone was talking about.

There are claims that cabbage juice can help treat acid reflux and during my research, I found out that fermented cabbage juice worked best. I know that cabbage is rich in vitamins A and K, it is also antioxidant and anti inflammatory. It is also known to improve gut health, detoxification and even weight loss. The claims that cabbage juice helps gut health is being studied however one study has shown that fermented cabbage is high in lactic acid bacteria which is known for gut health. Hence the claim that fermented cabbage juice will relief stomach ulcer and acid reflux. So I gave it a try.

To make fermented cabbage juice, I washed some cabbage and had it soaked in water for 3 days. I made sure to cover the entire cabbage with water. After three days, the cabbage did not smell foul. And then I blended the cabbage and the water in which it had been soaked before passing it through a mesh.

Cabbage juice after blending and passing through mesh

I stored the fermented cabbage juice in a container and placed it in the refrigerator. I consume one glass twice daily.

As for the blended cabbage itself, I didn’t discard it; rather I made a soup with it.

I have only been drinking the fermented cabbage juice for two days now so it’s too early to draw conclusions. What I do know is that I started releasing gas more often after consuming the fermented juice. I also noticed that I don’t feel as bloated as I used to. Although it’s too early to say it has cured me of GERD. So I will definitely keep you posted on the results.

Beyond drinking this fermented cabbage juice, I have realized that adopting a healthy diet is also very important for recovery and you have to make it a lifestyle because you can’t keep drinking proton inhibitors. If you must lose weight, please do. It also helps to take probiotics especially Greek yogurt. But for the sake of this experiment, I am not taking probiotics or proton inhibitors as I need to know for certain if fermented cabbage juice does work.

Cabbage soup however is delicious and filling when cooked with the right ingredients. Here is the link to the Cabbage soup recipe

So tell me your experience with acid reflux (GERD). What are you doing to help yourself?

Cheers!

Urban decay Hi-fi Shine lip gloss review

I have been using Urban Decay Hi-fi shine lip gloss since May. It is presented in a transparent tube with silver lid and casing. The packaging is quite attractive and I like the fact that it is easy to grip and use.

I bought two shades of this lip gloss -SPL which is a intense shimmering rose pink shade and “Snapped” which is an intense shimmering purple shade. The lip gloss is presented as a creamy texture while the applicator brush is firm enough to apply this non-clumpy creamy shimmering lip gloss without making a mess.

Upon opening the lid and applying on the lips, a soft but exciting minty scent filters into your nostrils like some sort of welcoming rite 😀. I actually love this about it. The lip gloss presents a sweet, candy-like fragrance and taste, which I am not too hyped about. I think I would have been okay with the minty scent because I sincerely do not like “sweet” lip glosses.

Besides the taste, I love the filling it gives the lips because the volume builds up quite easily. This lip gloss presents no clumps at all as it spreads smoothly with ease.

And the shine? Absolutely gorgeous! I love the glossy, shimmering finish and the fact that the minty scent lingers on for a while to create a “balmy” feel which is quite reassuring because you feel your lips being protected 😀.

I love everything about the lip glosses. Besides the sweet scent which I am not too hyped about, I love everything else about this lip glosses so I am going to give it a 4 out of 5 – just ’cause of the fragrance.

Lemon oil

Lemon essential oil is one of the favourite ingredients in the natural skincare products made by Ene Naturals because of its amazing properties. It is an antiseptic as such treats infections and it’s vitamin C rich content makes it a powerful tool for combating free radicals, acne and dark spots. Lemon oil is a great disinfectant and also a good repellent against insects.

Its energetic and invigorating scent makes it a great mood enhancer while its disinfecting and antiseptic property makes it ideal for treating dandruffs.

It’s ability to clear dark spots is what makes it ideal for skin brightening as when added to lotions, enhances their ability for an even skin tone.

Lemon oil helps to reduce excess oil from the skin. However, it is not advised to be applied topically to the skin as it makes the skin sensitive or photo-sensitive when exposed to sunlight. It is therefore recommended that lemon oil be diluted in carrier oils before being applied to the skin.

Lemon oil is also not ideal for children under five years of age because of its sensitivity. Little kids have very delicate, sensitive skin that is not ideal for lemon oil to be applied on. So please when buying natural skincare products for your kids, look out for lemon oil and make sure it is not listed on the ingredients list.

Self-love: secret motivation to weight loss

I went from a size ten to a size fourteen within the space of ten years and three children. In the past, I would sob and sigh in frustration at my weight gain. The result of this self-loathe and self-anger resulted in depression and dangerous dependence on comfort eating to make me feel better.

Whenever I was feeling blue for gaining that much weight, my brain would start to desire sugar which in some way, was meant to “pump” me up a little to give me temporary happiness or “high” so I found myself reaching out to sodas, chocolates and whatever was sweet. And then after such sugary food was consumed and I was happy for a while, I would start to sink again because I would start to feel guilty for eating the wrong foods and of course, the weight mounted leading me through that vicious circle of self-loathe, dependent on sugar, after regret, weight gain and then depression. This circle left me emotionally and mentally drained as well as fatigued and unfit. It took a strong personal resolve to break the circle.

I realized much later that self-loathe had been my enemy and that I needed to love my current body enough to want to enhance it to a healthier version of me. I started to count my blessings and tell myself that I would gain all that weight in a heart beat and still go through three caesarean because I have three beautiful and wonderful kids and these kids need their mother to be healthy and alive to take care of them. This became my motivation. So while I was shopping for body shaping under garments to make me look good outwardly and boost my self-confidence, I was also making resolutions and shopping for healthy foods to eat as well. Because my motivation to lose weight was no longer limited to the actual weight loss with the attendant reward of shopping new clothes sizes or having to wear those fabulous clothes that no longer fit me, I was much more focused on enjoying my fitness regiment and living healthier.

These days, I am no longer reaching out to sugar because I realized that I don’t need them to be happy or to stay positive. I am no longer burdened by the anger of not being able to fit into my old clothes rather my focus shifted to being healthy.

I realized too that our self-confidence and self-love depends on how we work with our current body. If you abandon your body and do not care about your appearance, it affects your self-confidence which also affects your fitness or workout. You cannot workout with a depressed mind – you got to be mentally fit and positive to commit to a workout and actually enjoy it. Because as soon as you begin to enjoy your workout sessions, then you are on your way to weight loss.

Am a work in progress; but I like the fact that I am free from self-loathe and frustration with self. I am more active than I ever was and my self-confidence has improved as well. So love your current body while you work on it to a healthier, stronger, beautiful you.

Cheers!

How to detox your body

It is a fact that our body produces new skin cells every day and that when it does, the skin pushes the dead cells to the surface of the skin where it clogs the pores and causes our skin to breakout into pimples, rash and even darken our skin and cause uneven skin tone. It is a fact that our body sheds up to 500 million dead cells every day so you can imagine how much dirt is deposited on our skin daily. And that is besides our skin’s exposure to pollutants and dirt in the environment coupled with harmful weather and environmental elements. Need I say how important it is to detoxify our skin regularly?

I know that we live busy lives; I also know that the vast majority of us want brighter, clearer, beautiful and glowing youthful skin. But how do you achieve that if you do not take care of yourself? The solution? – Skin detox!

So, how can you detoxify your skin? Here are a few steps to skin detox and how to achieve naturally glowing skin.

STEP 1:

DRY BODY BRUSHING

Why do we need dry body brushing? For start, it is a good cure for cellulite which build up on our thighs and around our body caused by toxins in our body. Dry body brushing also improves blood circulation which sometimes can be slow in people. Dry brushing also helps to rid the skin of dead cells.

All you need is a long brush that has soft, natural bristles and always brush gently using circular motions. I usually begin from my feet and work my way all the way up because this is the best way to improve blood circulation while sloughing off dead cells that cause your skin dullness. If you are too busy to do this yourself, get someone to help you or go to a spa and request for a body polish.

STEP 2:

THERAPEUTIC STEAM

Steaming helps your body to get rid of toxins as well as open up our skin pores. Steaming also improves circulation while helping you to relax. Certain essential oils are known for their detoxifying effect such as rosemary oil and grapefruit oil. I also use lemon oil, orange oil and lemon grass oil. The beautiful thing about steaming is that it gets rid of toxins, opens up your pores and relaxes you at the same time therefore steaming is good for both the mind and body.

To steam at home, get a bowl and fill with boiling water, add a few drops of essential oils – sometimes, I brew fresh lemongrass and steam over it. In Nigeria, this alone cures fever and any related feverish conditions like flu and cold. I also shred lemon or orange peel into the hot water as well. Afterwards, I get a large towel, lower my head a few inches away from the hot water and cover my head and the bowl with the towel to trap the steam in. Remember that you only need the steam of the water so please do not go too close to the water and get your face burnt.

If you are too busy, you can go to a spa for a full body steam or facial steam.

STEP 3:

A PURIFYING AND CALMING MASSAGE

A purifying and calming massage will help release toxins and relief stress at the same time. My go-to essential oils are eucalyptus oil, lavender oil, chamomile oil, olive oil, vanilla oil, shea butter and peppermint oil. So you can make a creamy mix from this to use for the massage. I use natural vanilla oil because it purifies the skin. Here is my purifying and calming massage cream recipe:

1 tablespoon shea butter

2 tablespoon olive oil

2 drops peppermint oil

2 drops eucalyptus oil

5 drops lavender oil

5 drops chamomile oil

5 drops vanilla oil

STEP 4:

PURIFYING MASK

A purifying mask not only releases toxins but purifies the skin and firms up the skin. For this, I usually use bentonite clay, turmeric, cocoa powder, milk and water.

If you can do these religiously every week or twice weekly, you will have a gorgeous. beautiful skin.

I would love to hear from you so share with us some of your skin detoxifying tips.

Cheers!

Body exfoliation & a natural glow

Basically almost all women that I have encountered want glowing skin. Those averse to skin bleaching will tell you of their desire to have beautiful glowing skin rather than being lighter than what they naturally are. And when you do ask them what they have been doing in the quest for this glowing skin, they tell you how they have spent a lot of money on soaps and lotions.

Truth be told, exfoliation is the most important aspect of any beauty regiment! You cannot expect to have beautiful skin without exfoliation.

You may ask why; well, exfoliation is vital and crucial to having glowing skin because it is the only process by which dead cells which clog our pores are eliminated. Our body sheds 500 million dead cells daily from its epidermis. What this means is that, these dead cells remain on our skin and form a thick layer that prevents moisture from escaping out of your skin and causing your skin to clog and appear dull. The result is acne, dark spots, uneven skin tone and premature aging.

When you exfoliate, you get rid of these ridiculous high amounts of dead cells deposited on your skin to reveal a brand new layer of skin. The process of exfoliation helps to improve circulation and that is besides getting rid of dead cells. So if you want glowing skin, exfoliate.

You can make exfoliator s with brown sugar, Dead Sea salt, coffee, oats, seeds from fruits, whole grains and a host of others. We also sell all natural exfoliators at our Organic store

You can also try this body polish recipe

3 tablespoons soft brown sugar

4 tablespoons coconut oil

1 tablespoon pure cocoa powder

5 drops of orange essential oil

Give this a go and you will love your skin.

Cheers!

A Lemony morning boost for your mind, body & skin

How we start our morning, goes a long way to affect our mood for the rest of the day. This is why rising up to a refreshing day gives our mind the much needed boost at the same time giving our body the sprite that is needed to carry us for the rest of the day. In aromatherapy, lemon comes readily to mind as a mind booster. With its invigorating and fresh scent, lemon is known to boost the mind and our mood which is why it is famed for its anti-depression therapy.

Today’s ever busy lifestyle of inadequate sleep or rest coupled with the hustle and bustle of modern living has made us predisposed to constant fatigue that rising up each morning can be an upheaval task. Many of us are not morning persons and I do know that many dread the start of a new week. So, keeping our minds positive and our bodies charged and ready to go can be a daunting task, which sadly affects our skin as well. All the stress that we experience daily reflects on our skin hence our skin break out regularly, we see wrinkles or dark circles much earlier in our lives and in some cases, our skin dries out due to poor nutrition and poor nourishment from skin care products.

Therefore, to kick start each day, we need a combination of light exercise, good nutrition and a healthy boost from lemon! Oh yes lemon! Because lemons improve our moods and even help to improve our memories and concentration, you can begin each day by inhaling lemon essential oil. You can create your own lemon room mist which you spray in the air in the morning and allow yourself to inhale to boost your mind.

HOW TO MAKE AROMATHERAPY LEMON ROOM MIST

Ingredients for making lemon room mist:

2 ounces distilled water

1 ounce alcohol

5-20 drops of lemon essential oil

Bathing with citrus scented soaps are equally uplifting and invigorating for your body and mind. I make natural skincare products for a living and I would always recommend that people add a few drops of lemon or orange essential oils to their liquid soaps when they are making them.

You can also give yourself a quick but therapeutic massage while in the shower by adding a few drops of lemon oil to bath water and having a hand towel soaked in it before squeezing out the water to massage your body from your feet all the way to your heart to help with blood circulation.

If you have time to spare or at the weekend, you can make a lemon scrub comprising of soft brown sugar, dead sea salt, some coconut oil and a few drops of lemon to scrub your entire body with. This invigorating scrub will not only cleanse your body but help with blood circulation and improve your mood.

Besides lemon, there are other essential oils that improves our moods as well and these are orange oil, rosemary oil, peppermint oil, basil oil and grapefruit oil. Now you have the tools to keep your body and mind prepared for a manic Monday! – Best solution for a positive Monday and a positive head start for a new week! No more Monday blues for you!

Try any of these and keep us posted on your results.

Cheers!
