Care for dry skin

Hi guys,

As part of this Month’s issue, I am focusing on care for the dry skin.

Okay, to start with, you might want to know how to check if you have dry skin. You know how we always mention the T-zone which is your forehead, your chin, your nose and the cheeks. So, if you find your skin dry and maybe, flaky, then you have dry skin. It is recommended that people with dry skin make effort at avoiding or reducing intake of alcohol and caffein as they both can cause dehydration.

Moisture, moisture and more moisture!

Your biggest challenge is that your skin loses moisture way faster than other skin types which causes drying. So, your number one goal is to retain that moisture in your skin! Thank God for beauty products that provide 24 hour moisture!

Besides shopping for moisturizers for your skin, you should also try products that contain Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) as it helps your skin as well.

Why you need Shea butter and cocoa butter

Shea butter and cocoa butter are both natural butters that moisturize and hydrate your skin. They both contain Vitamin E and will leave your skin supple, silky, soft and hydrated.

Here are world class moisturizing products that suit your need:

Palmer’s Shea butter soap bar is fantastic for dry skin.

Natural skin care for dry skin

More moisture…

Aloe Vera soothes the skin and heals dry skin, so you could scoop aloe Vera gel into a cup and use as body moisturizer. It is so easy to preserve aloe Vera by refrigerating. You could even keep it frozen. For a plant that thrives in Africa’ harsh weather, requiring no care at all, you can imagine how much moisture it must contain!

You got to love cucumber if you have dry skin. Cucumber is principally water, which hydrates the skin and give it much needed moisture. You could use cucumber juice as toner. This is gentle enough to not dry your skin as beauty stores cleanser or toner brands might. Do keep in mind that too much cleansing can lead to excessive drying, which is why cucumbers are great for dry skin.

However, if you feel that using cucumber as toner might not suit your lifestyle, use toners and cleansers that are meant for dry skin only.

Masking with honey: Make honey your friend if you want to help your dry skin. After cleaning your face, apply honey all over your face as mask and leave on for fifteen minutes. And then rinse off.

Embrace oils

Oils lubricate the skin as well as hydrate and give the skin shine and suppleness. You could use coconut oil, almond oil or olive oil as you would body lotion. But for long lasting moisturizing, pour some body oils into bath. The combination of water and oil work well to moisturize and lock in moisture. For better results, do not towel dry but allow both water and oil to dry on your body. You will be hydrated for longer.

However, if you do not have these oils, use baby oil – it will just be fine. Here are some oils I recommend: Neutrogena light sesame oil
